Generalization of the Den Hartog model and rule-of-thumb formulas for optimal tuned mass dampers

2022

In recent years, the need of improving safety standards for both existing and new buildings against earthquake and wind loads has created a growing interest in the use of the so-called tuned mass dampers, exploited to control, in active or passive way, the dynamic response of structures. To design and optimize tuned mass damper systems, the effective analytical procedure proposed by Den Hartog in his seminal work (Den Hartog, 1985) has been widely adopted over the years, without including damping of the main structure. However, in many cases of engineering interest, the damping of the primary system plays a key role in the overall mechanical response, with the result of an increase in compl…

Use of heart rate variability in monitoring stress and recovery in judo athletes

2013

The main objective of this study was to examine the effect of different judo training loads on heart rate variability (HRV) measurements, to determine if they can be used as valid indicators in monitoring stress and recovery in judo athletes. Fourteen male national-standard judo athletes were randomly divided into 2 groups, and each group followed a different type of training, namely, a high training load (HTL) and a moderate training load program (MTL). Data collection included HRV measurements, a Recovery Stress Questionnaire for athletes (RESTQ-SPORT), and strength measurements, 4 weeks before and after the training program. The HTL group had lower square root of the mean squared differe…

Superconvergent Perturbation Theory, KAM Theorem (Introduction)

2001

Here we are dealing with an especially fast converging perturbation series, which is of particular importance for the proof of the KAM theorem (cf. below).

Nuclear-spin comagnetometer based on a liquid of identical molecules

2018

Atomic comagnetometers are used in searches for anomalous spin-dependent interactions. Magnetic field gradients are one of the major sources of systematic errors in such experiments. Here we describe a comagnetometer based on the nuclear spins within an ensemble of identical molecules. The dependence of the measured spin-precession frequency ratio on the first-order magnetic field gradient is suppressed by over an order of magnitude compared to a comagnetometer based on overlapping ensembles of different molecules. Our single-species comagnetometer is shown to be capable of measuring the hypothetical spin-dependent gravitational energy of nuclei at the $10^{-17}$ eV level, comparable to the…
